Cheese Calories

In the risk of sounding cheesy, the question of cheese calories is, (how should I put it?) plain silly. It’s not that it doesn’t have a serious answer, but come on – we all know about cheese and the cheese calories, don’t we? Am I trying to fool myself into eating a fat chunky slice of pizza without considering all the cheese calories in it?

But we’re here to gather some information about calories in foods in general and specifically about calories in cheese and have a better knowledge of what we eat. So let’s discuss cheese in a few ways: cheese calories, cheese nutrition values and cheese types.

If you want a simple straight forward answer for the cheese calories question, here’s a simple thumb rule that would suit most hard yellow cheeses:

1 oz of cheese (usually 1 slice or 2 small cubes) has around 100 calories and 8 grams of fat (out of which 5 grams are saturated fat).

A third of the cheese is fat. And almost two thirds of that fat is saturated fat. So it is always better to consume cheese in very small pieces or as thin spreads rather than in those thick multi layered chunks on pizzas.

Obviously when checking low fat cheese the amount of cheese calories will decrease. Low fat cheddar cheese can have as much as half the calories of full fat cheddar cheese. And low fat riccota can deduct around third of its cheese calories. But again – if eat a lot of the cheese, the cheese calories will add up!

A unique case is cottage cheese. It has mainly protein and it cheese calories level is only 30 calories for 1 oz of cheese.
